My earliest memory of truly enjoying a well-produced piece of music was in the early 1980s in Belfast. My dad had just purchased his first decent stereo system, which included an iconic pair of Acoustic Research AR18 speakers. I remember sitting with my best friend, listening to "Unguarded Moment" by The Church, and being totally mesmerised by the sound that was coming out of those little boxes. That was the spark that ignited my curiosity and love of music production.
I have been a musician for most of my adult life, performing and touring internationally since the mid-1990s. In 2001, I took on the task of recording and engineering our second album. I had no idea at the time that learning to record and mix music required the same discipline as learning to play an instrument: practice makes perfect. However, doing so gave me the opportunity to get involved in all aspects of the creative process. It was a challenge, but it was also incredibly satisfying to hear the album come to life, especially hearing the final product for the first time.
Over the past 20 years, I have had the privilege of working on countless albums with a wide range of artists. I take pride in my ability to capture the sound of a performance as accurately as possible, and I am always looking for ways to improve my craft. Whether I am recording a solo artist or a full band, I strive to create recordings that are both sonically pleasing and emotionally engaging.
